Shaw Speed & Custom’s Flatliner takes a 2006 Harley-Davidson Heritage Softail in
a very different direction. Rather than leaning into the usual heavyweight cruiser
treatment, Steve Willis’s UK workshop reshaped the donor around a stripped-back
1930s and 1940s visual language, then added carefully chosen modern details. The
result is a green-and-silver custom with a narrow, purposeful silhouette and a surprising
amount of handcrafted work in plain view.

## A Heritage Softail with a lighter visual language

The project reportedly began with a tired, fuel-injected 1450cc Heritage Softail
supplied by a customer. Shaw Speed & Custom removed the original bodywork and revised
the proportions with a handmade rear fender, a compact tank and a leaf-sprung single
seat. The tank came from a 2011 Harley-Davidson XL1200 and was modified to suit
the pre-war-inspired theme.

That combination changes the motorcycle’s character. The tank sits visually close
to the engine, while the open area beneath the seat exposes the frame and rear wheel.
A number board at the front conceals a digital speedometer and gives the offset
headlight a distinctive visual counterpart. The green frame and fenders, polished
metal and brown leather create a restrained palette rather than a collection of
unrelated custom cues.

## Engine details with a period-minded finish

According to the supplied build account, the engine was rebuilt using a 1550cc kit.
Roland Sands Design covers were anodized silver to bring a more retro appearance
to the modernized V-twin. The intake is particularly inventive: an RSD back plate
is paired with a brass marine drain cover, fabricated to coordinate with the brass-
toned grips and pegs from Chops 76.

Wrapped exhaust headers reinforce the mechanical focus of the build, while the brass
intake and matching control details prevent the polished engine from looking overly
clinical. These are small choices, but they give Flatliner a consistent visual thread
from the cockpit to the crankcase.

## Reworked wheels, controls and chassis details

The wheels are original Harley-Davidson rims sourced from other motorcycles, then
re-machined to accept brass nipples and respoked around machined, painted hubs.
The hub detailing uses the colors of the cycling World Championship rainbow jersey,
a personal reference to Shaw’s past and present—and hoped-for future—championship
wins.

Shaw Speed & Custom made the handlebars and fitted them with Performance Machine
controls. At the rear, the brake assembly was moved to the sprocket side. The workshop
also overhauled and lightened the wiring, an invisible change that supports the
uncluttered appearance everywhere else.

Flatliner works because its period influence is expressed through proportion, materials
and fabrication rather than costume-like decoration. The reported engine enlargement
adds substance to the donor’s mechanical package, but the bike’s strongest achievement
is visual: it makes a large Heritage Softail look lean, deliberate and unusually
coherent.
